YES! In the micro-blogging world of Twitter, Ed Dale is indeed more popular than Paris Hilton.
Am I crazy? How did I come up with this information? The answer is Twist.
This cool site enables you to monitor trends in Twitter. Think of Google Trends, but focused only within the micro-blogging community of Twitter. Check out the screenshot below. The red graph represents the number of times “Ed Dale” is posted by someone in Twitter over the past week. The orange is the amount of times “Paris Hilton” is discussed.

As you can see, Ed Dale is definitely more popular than Paris Hilton. Perhaps next week Paris will have a wardrobe malfunction and then be the talk of Twitter, but for now Ed Dale has her beat.
In the affiliate marketing world, one of the techniques some of us use is to check out Google Trends to see if the particular niche we are going to target has an adequate amount of search traffic. However, since Google Trends is not real time, if we only focus on Google Trends, we might miss out on a chance to catch a spike in search traffic, which means a lost opportunity.
For example, imagine if you were thinking of setting up a CPA campaign for Microsoft Zune, and you check Google Trends to see the search volume for the past 30 days compared to an Ipod. Here is what you will see.

As you can see, according to Google Trends, Microsoft’s Zune doesnt even have a pulse, just a complete “flat line” over the past 30 days. However, if you run this same search using Twist, you see a completely different picture.

There was a HUGE spike today in traffic. Why? A quick search over at Google News reveals that GameStop plans to stop selling the Zune player. With roughly 4,500 outlets, this is a blow for the Zune player, but it could be an opportunity for an internet marketer. Think about it, here a coulple possible ideas:
1) You can create a CPA campaign using a poll asking users what they think of the Zune player and if Microsoft should “throw in the towel” and admit iPod the winner. Once they select their choice, you can then ask them for their zip code to enter a drawing for a free iPod or something similar. Some of these pay as much as .50 cents per zip code and/or email submit.
2) You can create an Adwords campaign promoting iPods and iPod related products that highlights this news for people doing searches for “buy zune” or anything related to the Zune player and your product. If I’m doing a search for Zune, and I came across an ad that said, “GameStop has given up on Zune, Why should you as well?” I’ll definitely click on the ad.
As you can see, if I would have only used Google Trends, I would have missed this opportunity. By tapping into the micro-blogging community and searching for what people are talking about RIGHT NOW, I can quickly spot trends (and profit from them) before they hit the mainstream press.
